Jyannis goes Hollywood! Man, I just found out that Steven Spielberg is the producer for this movie! >faints< 'Red sun, Black sand' (Japanese title is called 'Letter from Iwa Jima') is the accompanying Japanese-point-of-view version of the American movie 'Flags of our Fathers'. The film is set around the battle in Iwa Jima which took place for 40 days and 40 nights during the World War II. Nino is currently in Los Angeles for the set filming. He arrived on March 11th, I think.

English-written online news/report/blog articles are lapping it up. Nino's name is usually mentioned second to Watanabe Ken! >dies< It's so exciting to see something I can understand completely at one read. Ahh...

Go try Googling: Kazunari Ninomiya red sun

See what comes up!

Eastwood signs Japanese stars

Oscar-winning actor, director and general Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood has signed Japanese star Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya for his upcoming war epic 'Red Sun, Black Sand'.

The 'Mystic River' filmmaker has two World War II films in the pipeline, 'Flags Of Our Fathers' and 'Red Sun, Black Sand' as he hopes to look at the infamous Pacific War from both the American and the Japanese perspectives respectively.

According to Empire film magazine, 'Red Sun' is due to start shooting later this month and Eastwood has rushed to sign Watanabe to play the role of Japanese general Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who led his forces during the gruelling battle for Iwo Jima for 40 days and nights.

In addition to Watanabe and Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase and Shido Nakamura have all signed on for the film.

Eastwood is currently in post-production on 'Flags Of Our Fathers', with both films due for a staggered release later this year.

Yeah, Watanabe Ken of The Last Samurai and Memoirs of Geisha. Man, I hope Jyannis (or at the very least, Arashi!!) would come for the premieres (possibly overseas - like USA or UK!!) to support the movie. Smell an Oscar nomination?

Gambatte Nino!  :cool3:

I'm so excited for this movie!! I thought since Nino wasn't THE star that he wouldn't have a big role, but he seems to have the 2nd biggest role so that's exciting news!! I think this will be a great movie... :acute:

I like this article too~~~ Although they put Kazuya instead of Kazunari. Is Kazunari an uncommon name in Japan or can his kanji be read as Kazuya too? Oh well... Arashi got a mention here! The film is by Dreamworks!

Watanabe joins cast of Clint Eastwood's second Iwo Jima film
Friday, March 10, 2006 at 07:26 EST

TOKYO — Ken Watanabe has joined the cast of Clint Eastwood's upcoming film about Iwo Jima, titled "Red Sun, Black Sand" (formerly "Lamps Before the Wind"), Dreamworks Studio announced Wednesday. "Red Sun, Black Sand" is one of two films that the 75-year-old director is making about the six men who raised an American flag on Mount Suribachi during World War II. It tells the story from the Japanese side of the battle, while the other film, "Flags of Our Fathers," shows the U.S. point of view. Both are scheduled for simultaneous release in the fall.

Watanabe, 46, best known for his role as the title character in "The Last Samurai," will star as Lt-Gen Kuribayashi. Other Japanese actors cast in the film include Kazuya Ninomiya, 22, from the popular group Arashi, and Shido Nakamura, 33. They and other actors were chosen through videotape auditions, Dreamworks said.

Ninomiya, who will make his Hollywood film debut, said he will put as much passion as he can into the role and hopes that the relatives of those who died in the battle for Iwo Jima will feel empathy.

Most of the dialogue in "Red Sun, Black Sand" will be in Japanese, Dreamworks said. The film is being produced by Steven Spielberg.

The Oscar-winning Eastwood visited Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara last year to seek support for the films. Before meeting the governor, he went to Iwo Jima, one of the Ogasawara islands in the Pacific 1,200 kms south of Tokyo.

Ishihara asked Eastwood to respect Japan's fallen soldiers. The director told Ishihara that he would "absolutely not" trample on Japanese feelings.

Eastwood hopes to film some of "Red Sun, Black Sand" on Iwo Jima and told USA Today this week that "I'll be the only non-Japanese-speaking person within miles." Japanese-American screenwriter Iris Yamashita is writing the script for film, in consultation with Paul Haggis, who adapted "Flags," and who directed this year's best picture Oscar winner "Crash."

The Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 left 21,000 Japanese and 6,800 U.S. soldiers dead in one month. It produced one of the most impressive images of the war, a photograph of six U.S. military personnel raising a U.S. flag on the high point of the island.

The photo, by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, was the subject of controversy after it emerged it had not been taken under fire as previously reported but may have been posed.

The two films are based on the book "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley and Ron Powers. It chronicles one man's attempt to piece together his father's role in raising the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima.

These 2 Iwa Jima films (US and Japanese versions) will be released by DreamWorks and Warner Bros. Warner Bros!!! >dreaming of red carpet premieres<

I found this article (3-10-06) that was talking about the movie, and I'm pissed off now. No offense to the author but I don't like when she said that Nino's seems to be in some boy band. The way she writes that just make me mad. I mean com'on , the dude is a big pop star. She couldn't even spell Nino's first name right, I'm blabbing to much here, GOMEN NE  :diao:

Watanabe on Eastwood's Iwo Jima
Confirming consistent internet rumors, it was announced yesterday that Ken Watanabe will star in the Japanese half of Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima project, Red Sun, Black Sand. Watanabe will play Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the general who led the Japanese forces on the island; the movie's story takes its inspiration from letters the general wrote during the battle. Also in the cast are Shido Nakamura, Kazuya Kazunari Ninomiya (who actually seems to be in some sort of a boy band), Tsuyoshi Ihara, and Ryo Kase.

But actually, this author somehow right. Its only for small part of the world Nino is The Great, but most ppl even dont suspect about his existence. And even if Arashi have foreign fans, they still unknown for the most part of the world. Though I think that this author not very professional here or dont think seriously about non-americans.

thats not professional for her to be writting about that. Its completely out of the context and tone of the article. For some he may just be "part of some boy band" but i think she should have some respect that in his own country he's pretty big...it is kinda bothering me, but at least he's getting mostly good, and competent, press

sigh. there are so many of such unprofessional reporters.

most of the reported info on arashi has been so untrue that so many of us here just wanted to slam the darn reporter. the latest was the dissing on how can HYD be compared to the taiwanese ver.

ma ma~ we'll get heart attacks if we take into consideration on what these people say. one thing we can comfort ourselves with is that... hey~ we are not as ignorant as some! er...  ...

It seems that people do not think highly of boyband.. well,he obviously haven't know about our boyband arashi which is not the same with other boyband he knows.. no prob.. hopefully he'll know how great arashi is after he see the movie&change his word.. = )

I'm very happy for Nino, but there is no doubt that he'll end up as a soldier who probably will get killed or kamikaze poor thing ;_; and I read up about the Iwo Jima strategy and reading it got me upset cos it says:

The Japanese strategy was unique for three reasons:
1. The Japanese didn't fight above ground. They fought the battle entirely from beneath the ground. They dug 1,500 rooms into the rock. These were connected with 16 miles of tunnels.
2. Japanese strategy called for "no Japanese survivors." They planned not to survive.
3. Japanese strategy was for each soldier to kill 10 Americans before they themselves are killed.

Strategy no. 2.... :wallbash:

yeah we just went over this a couple of weeks ago in my history class and my teacher was saying that there were so many japanese deaths not because U.S. soldiers had killed that many but because they would have rather died than be captured....im pretty sure thats what he said but i dont exactly remember...i was thinking about this movie the whole time, I even brought it up in the lecture! <---dork

but even though poor neener is gonna most likely die, hopefully we'll see a lot of him still, ne?

i dont want to double post but i just cant keep this to myself!! Nino had a press conference with all the people from the movie in Japan! I havent seen it yet but ive seen some pictures floating around and omg nino is standing right next to Clint Eastwood who is standing next to Wantanabe Ken. Since Wantanabe is the lead in this movie it must mean something if Nino is on the other side of Eastwood, right?
