Arashi consists of 5 members and they debuted on a boat at Hawaii on 15 September 1999 (Hawaii Time) (16 September 1999 – Japan Time). They are part of Johnny’s Entertainment (“JE”).

Arashi means storm in Japanese, which would also mean taking the place by storm. Their debut single was also A Ra Shi and it REALLY took Japan by storm. Their debut single topped the Oricon Chart.

Johnny’s Entertainment Managing Director, Mr. Kitakawa named the group as Arashi because he wanted to form a group with character and take the world by storm. So far, it is the only group in JE to have the name of the group in kanji (Chinese Characters). 

And indeed Arashi took the music entertainment scene by storm. They won the hearts of many people in Japan and outside Japan.
